In episode 9 of Netflix series Daybreak, Josh makes a deal with Eli to save Sam. Also, Baron Triumph reverts back to Principal Burr…or not.

In episode 9 of Daybreak, Josh (Colin Ford) and Sam (Sophie Simnett) had some relationship troubles in a full-on flashback story. “Josh vs. the Apocalypse: Part 2” goes back to life after the bomb. It begins with Baron Triumph resuming his original identity as Principle Michael Burr (Matthew Broderick) announcing his return over the high school’s PA system. Turbo (Cody Kearsley) doesn’t take it too well, so there’s a fight between him and the Baron. Even though Turbo gets him with an ax, the Baron ultimately takes Turbo down, further disfiguring his face (which was already pretty rough).

Baron takes over — at the request of the Jocks — and encourages a return to order. His rules are relatively modest: No yelling, use “spirit fingers” (a laughable thing), be safe, be respectful, and be positive. Considering these are coming from a cannibal, it all takes on an ironic nature. Still, with Turbo expelled, the school’s back in session…or is it? Everyone tries to return to normal at the school. In fact, Burr even shaves his beard and puts away his Baron Triumph gear. He also reveals that, when the mass destructive bomb hit, he survived in the school’s fallout shelter. However, he was by no means totally unaffected by the explosion.

Josh’s hunting trip memories/ Eli and the cards

As previously established on Daybreak, Josh wants to save Sam from the Jocks, then move into a mansion with a moat. Eli (Gregory Kasyan) wants Josh to rescue her, too, but only so he can kick everyone out of the mall. Josh has a conflict: He wants to both rescue Sam and stop Eli’s evictions. This episode still has flashbacks. Josh remembers his dad (Mather Zickel) hunting in the Canadian wilderness. In addition to calling hunting a waste of time, he realizes the hunting trips weren’t just about shooting animals. There were 44 years of hunting trip traditions, and his lack of interest hurt his dad, who eventually died (and Josh has little to remember him by).

In any case, Josh comes to an agreement with Eli: If he’ll get Eli some Magic: The Gathering trading cards and pledge to never return to the mall, Eli will give him a Baron Triumph costume and not kick everyone out. As they head out, Jayden Hoyles (Rob H. Roy) attacks Eli, mistaking him for the real Baron Triumph. Eli soon dies, but not before getting to see Hoyles gets humped by a mutant pug. Separately, KJ (Chelsea Zhang) decides to call the mall survivors “Daybreakers.”

Other stuff that happens

Wesley Fists (Austin Crute) takes care of a badly injured Turbo. Angelica (Alyvia Alyn Lind) and The Witch (Krysta Rodriguez) use maggots to cleanse Turbo’s face wounds. When Turbo awakens, Wesley proposes a duel to the death. Back at the school, Principal Burr dislikes a gross-out conversation the kids have in class. Daybreak also informs us that teenagers survived due to an HPV vaccine.

On that note, Burr creates a special “slime” as an immunity booster (inspired by Angelica). When Mona Lisa (Jeanté Godlock) passes out after eating slime, it’s obvious he’s back to his old ways (though, honestly, what did they expect?). Before the episode ends, Burr is shown drinking smoothies made from the severed limbs of Barry (Jon Levert). Burr also has a messianic complex, intending to start over. By the time Josh meets Sam with a sunflower in his hand, Burr blows up the school
