Lost in Space season 2, episode 5 recap: Run
By Wade Wainio
In episode 5 of Netflix series Lost in Space, Judy runs against the clock (and against aliens) to save John. Also, Penny seeks Smith’s secrets in garbage.
Previously on Lost in Space, John Robinson (Toby Stephens) got stuck in a well. June Harris / Dr. Smith (Parker Posey) used some poison kelp to avoid incarceration and erased her past to forge a new identity. Also, Will Robinson (Maxwell Jenkins) attempted to bond with a robot that’s just not having it. While our previous recap mentioned John getting out of the well, this time we’ll analyze specifically how Judy (Taylor Russell) helps him survive his ordeal. This episode of Lost in Space also explores the complex relationship Judy has with her stepfather.
It begins with a younger Judy (Ella Simone Tabu) giving a show and tell presentation to her class, talking about her biological father being an innovator regarding Alpha Centauri. She then mentions her other hero, John. Then we get back to the present, where John is still trapped in the well. He falls and gets impaled on a metal rid just below his abdomen. John calls Judy, located at the colonist base camp 20, miles from well. Victor Dhar (Raza Jaffrey) lets Judy take her a Chariot to bring medical help to her dad. Unfortunately, the vehicle breaks apart due to the metal-eating parasite. After an inspiring flashback of John teaching her to ride a bike and also to race, she decided she can reach John in 2 hours if she really books it, and possibly save his life.

Not only does John risk blood loss, but Judy must also find the fastest route possible. It happens to be outside the colony’s perimeter fence. In a Jurassic Park-like moment, Judy is then chased by dinosaur-like alien creatures. She applies John’s advice of “Accept the unexpected, assess your options, move forward,” jumping from rock to rock and outwitting the hungry reptiles.
Though she has flashbacks of being bitter about John’s absence during military tours, she realizes how important he is to her and the Robinson family. She eventually reaches the well and drops him epinephrine and antibiotics through a tube, saving his life. It’s one of the strongest scenes of family support in Lost in Space so far, and not just for the season.
Sifting through trash
Lost in Space also examines the twisted creation of June’s identity as “Dr. Smith.” Perhaps against her better judgment, Penny Robinson (Mina Sundwall) visits her in her new office, asking her what she did to Captain Radic (Shaun Parkes). June evades her line of questioning, so Penny follows her, seeing her throw a blue bag down the Resolute’s trash chute. A little later, Penny reunites with Vijay (Ajay Friese) in class, but not really to rekindle their romance (such as it was).
Instead, they head off to the trash compactor to look for June’s blue bag. While looking, Penny astonishingly finds Oreos (a callback to a season 1 episode) and Vijay asks why she called him a bad kisser. It turns out they were each other’s first kisses. Penny eventually finds the bag with a piece of paper that says “Killed” on it, then the trash compactor is turned back on. Penny tries to escape but her foot is stuck. She also panics when Vijay leaves. However, he only leaves to turn off the compactor.
Later, “Dr, Zoe Smith” shows up in class to see Penny, and Penny tries to hide the paper she found in the compactor. However, June says she knows they were in the dumpster. She emphasizes that Penny needs to understand that she’s Dr. Smith now and forever. There’s another issue, too: The parasitic spore begins eating through the ship’s floor. As another development, Maureen (Molly Parker) and Ben Adler (JJ Feild) bring Will along to seek his missing robot. While it’s partly to pacify Will, it’s also to unlock the secrets of the alien robot language.
