Los Espookys season 1, episode 5 recap: El laboratorio alienígena (The Alien Lab)
By Wade Wainio
In episode 5 of HBO’s Los Espookys, the spooksters dress up as aliens, Tati ruins her life more and Ambassador Gibbons meets her mirror image.
Previously on Los Espookys, the spooksters attempted to fake a magic abduction in exchange for work visas. However, things went awry with US Ambassador Gibbons (Greta Titelman) being trapped in a parallel universe, thanks to Los Espookys using an actual cursed mirror. In episode 5, we are introduced to the mirror universe’s Melanie Gibbons.
Fortunately, she doesn’t seem to be particularly evil, or anything like that. In fact, she seems rather helpful. In any case, only Ambassador Gibbons (or a doppelganger) can legally expedite Los Espookys’ visas to work on a film project in America. To that end, Andrés (Julio Torres) wants to bribe the.
This unique embassy problem complicates another project, too. Los Espookys recently got a gig attracting tourists at a beach. Now they must rely on Tati (Ana Fabrega) alone for that. Tati’s own life is complicated, mostly due to her exotic understanding of the world.

For example, she recently rejected Duke Felipe of Spain (Ignacio Garmendia) because he wasn’t the cartoon prince depicted on his dating profile. Also, she’s been strong-armed by Hierbalite CEO Mark Stevens (John Early) into giving him money, lest he simply murders her. In this episode, Stevens is literally a cut-throat businessman, threatening to do just that to Tati. Felipe shows up to offer Stevens money, but Tati refuses his help! (Honestly, at this point, Tati is all but doing herself in).
The alien lab
They meet Dr. Lucrecia, who wants them to create aliens for her to justify her funding. She requests that the aliens have “penetrating gazes with black eyes,” and they are to be naked. She specifies also that one should look like E.T., though there’s confusion over what that means. They end up dressing as ultra-cheesy looking aliens, yet are (somehow) convincing enough to get the job done. Also, Tati goes to her beach assignment dressed as Marilyn Monroe’s ghost possessed by Fred Flintstone, and not a conventional sea monster.
Meanwhile, on his downtime, Andrés is downloading The King’s Speech for the mermaid-like, parasitic water demon called Water’s Shadow (Spike Einbinder). Why? So the creature can tell Andrés about his real parents. Obviously, it’s not very easy to explain, no matter how hard one tries. Will Andrés ever get the answers, and will he accept them if he does?
Mirror Melanie
The mirror is patched up for Melanie to return to reality. However, the doppelganger version also comes through. Though the real Melanie is mad at Los Espookys, the double promises to still procure visas. However, no one but Renaldo (Bernardo Velasco)wants to meet Bianca Nova (Carol Kane) and Uncle Tico (Fred Armisen) for the horror movie project. Will it ever get underway or will Bianca end up killing herself in a creative downward spiral?
