12 must watch Netflix originals to binge this March
Elite: Season 3 – March 13
If you like soapy melodramatics and sexy scandals set in a high school for rich kids, then Elite is the perfect series for you. There’s sex, drugs, murder, blackmail, revenge, betrayal, and lots and lots of secrets. The whole premise is that three working-class teens enroll in this elite school, causing socio-economic tensions along with the usual teenage drama.
Season three sees the murder of another student and the ensuing chaos as secrets are uncovered in the course of the investigation. The popularity of the series has also seen an increase in budget and quality, so you can look forward to those choppy soap opera visuals getting a glossy makeover.
Bloodride: Season 1 – March 13
From the director and writer of the Norwegian series Maniac, Kjetil Indregard and Netflix bring us what sounds for all the world like a Scandinavian version of Tales from the Crypt. Bloodride is a tongue-in-cheek horror anthology featuring six unique stories of otherworldly terror and grotesque humor. If Maniac is any indication of the tone they’re going for, it will be a strange and wonderful ride indeed.
What really pulls me in from Netflix’s description is the promise that each story will be “told with glee and enthusiasm.” It brings to mind the kind of delight taken in over-the-top action thrillers like Shoot ‘em Up or horror parodies like Tucker & Dale vs Evil. These are humorous genre homages told with love and relish with a particular pleasure taken in the most absurdly overblown and exaggerated elements. I am excited to see what Bloodride has in store for us.
