Castlevania season 3 premiere recap: Bless Your Dead Little Hearts
By Wade Wainio
In the season 3 premiere of Netflix’s Castlevania, Trevor and Sypha enter a new town, Carmilla’s as cruel as ever and Alucard is pathetically lonely.
The season 2 finale of Castlevania examined the hardship of Alucard (James Callis) killing his own father, Vlad Dracula Tepes (Graham McTavish). It also offered a glimpse into how its characters (and the series) will move past Dracula’s death. The season 3 premiere starts 1 month after Dracula’s demise. Alucard is out in nature catching a fish, and he makes a nice meal for himself. We then see he has dolls to awkwardly stand in for Trevor Belmont (Richard Armitage) and Sypha Belnades (Alejandra Reynoso).
The real Trevor and Sypha are first shown on a horse-drawn carriage. While it seems romantic at first, night-time is falling upon them, and soon creatures set in to attack them. This includes a large man-wolf and a minotaur with an ax against Belmont, and a harder-to-describe beast or two battling Sypha. Trevor uses his morning star to rip out the minotaur’s brains. He also snaps the man-wolf’s knee before ending its life. Sypha is no less impressive, climbing the sky on magical ice plates. Neat trick!

Carmilla (Jaime Murray) is back in Castlevania. After the fall of Dracula, she seems to be back to square one. However, we meet her vampire sisters — Lenore (Jessica Brown Findlay), Morana (Yasmine Al Massri), and Striga (Ivana Milicevic). Also, Carmilla has not gotten rid of Hector (Theo James), who had been Dracula’s devil forge master who is now a slave.
Carmilla refers to Hector as “It.”
saying “Take this to a cell and lock it up, throw it food once a day.” Unfortunately, the food Hector receives is covered in mold, and he also has cold water thrown upon his body. Carmilla is also responsible for this Castlevania episode’s title. After drinking some virgin’s blood, the vampiress remarks: “Bless your dead little hearts.” Obviously Carmilla hasn’t mellowed out since last season.
Lindenfeld
Trevor and Sypha find their way to a town called Lindenfeld. There they meet Saint Germain (Bill Nighy) and the village leader, known simply as The Judge (Jason Isaacs). They appear to belong to a religious order, though it’s unclear how they view Trevor and Sypha. However, another character named Sala (Navid Negahban) seems a bit strange. He seems to be a Dracula loyalist of sorts, expressing a desire to punish whoever killed the iconic vampire.
Technically it wasn’t truly Trevor and Sypha who did so, as Alucard made the fatal blow. In fact, Dracula technically seemed willing to be killed in the end, echoing Carmilla’s concerns that Dracula was equally as suicidal as he was genocidal. In any case, he lingers as a potential threat. On the lighter side of things, Trevor sells the man-wolf’s teeth to a merchant, which is a surprisingly effective little touch to the episode.
