In episode 6 of Raising Dion, Dion undergoes superhero training with Charlotte, Pat awkwardly kisses Nicole and BIONA is spying.

Previously on Raising Dion, Nicole (Alisha Wainwright) scrambled to prevent Dion (Ja’Siah Young) from having a disastrous birthday. Also, we saw how her husband Mark (Michael B. Jordan) died and Dion saw the mysterious (and apparently deadly) man in the storm. In episode 6, Dion actually tells Nicole about that crazy storm man. He mentions him to Esperanza (Sammi Haney), too, calling him “crooked man.”

He notes that, for whatever reason, the storm left when Dion’s mom arrived. Interestingly, Dion also learns that BIONA is sponsoring his class’s science fair, with the message coming from Suzanne Wu (Ali Ahn) herself. Also, Jonathan (Gavin Munn) gets assigned to Dion and Esperanza’s group.

Upon returning home, Dion reiterates his concerns about the crooked man. No longer wanting to deny reality, Nicole shows Dion the picture of it that was sent by Charlotte Tuck (Deirdre Lovejoy). Soon after that, Suzanne meets Pat Rollins (Jason Ritter) and approves for their research project.

They head back to the lab Pat and Dion broke into recently and they discuss a fox found after the aurora event. Apparently the fox was originally at death’s door from radiation poisoning but now is cured. Pat comes to suspect that Dion reversed necrosis in the animal, but does not mention it to Suzanne, fearing what might happen as a result.

Superhero training

Raising Dion already hinted at superhero training for Dion, with Nicole or Pat acting as mentors here and there. However, when Charlotte accepts Nicole’s invitation to help train him to control his powers, it’s more comprehensive. They head to a basement for the training. Charlotte tends not to sugar coat things, either

She tells Dion that the storm took his dad and nearly took her, referring to the so-called “crooked man.” She has Dion channel a ball of energy but struggles to control it. When Nicole expresses shock at Charlotte’s electrical shocks directed at Dion, Charlotte tells her to leave. Nicole does, actually understanding that she would interfere with Charlotte’s teaching method.

Pat calls Nicole, telling her about his expanded role in the BIONA project, but he also asks about Mark’s work files. Meanwhile, Dion’s training continues. Charlotte turns invisible and gives Dion more small zaps.

She realizes that he’s holding back and tends to lack focus.

She encourages him not to “shrink himself” to make others comfortable. George (Afemo Omilami), the building superintendent, enters the basement after hearing the ruckus. They turn invisible, but Dion annoyingly makes mouth sounds and almost gets them caught. They do avoid being revealed, but just barely.

Nicole’s rekindled interest in dance/Pat’s awkward aspirations at romance?

Raising Dion has always been partly about Nicole. How do you raise a burgeoning superhero kid and retain some semblance of normalcy? She also wants to move on from Mark, who has been deceased for some time. She’s also holding back regarding her interest in dance.

So, when she starts dancing independently and is spotted by Rashad (Victor Sho), it seems to reinvigorate her a bit. She misses dancing professionally and after Rashad encourages her to practice, it seems obvious that she likes him. Of course, things do get a little complicated, much like in real life.

Pat and Nicole also go out for a walk. He tells her about the healed fox and mentions that it may have been Dion. In turn, she tells him about the crooked man. After Nicole beats him at pool, Pat awkwardly kisses her. Is it a step too far? Maybe, especially after Nicole reacts.

Later, Nicole finds an SD card hidden in Mark’s old watch (which had been gifted to Dion). Inside the SD card is a handy list of people who saw and/or were directly impacted by the aurora event. It also turns out that a flying drone has been monitoring Charlotte and Dion training, including recording their turning invisible. The drone is a spy camera for Suzanne and BIONA.
