Cursed Films is a savvy docuseries that explores some of the “curses” and myths behind Hollywood’s most infamous horror films.

If you’re a big fan of horror movies, then odds are you’ve heard the alleged myths and stories about some of Hollywood’s most “cursed” productions. Cursed Films explores the truth behind the legends plaguing everything from Poltergeist to The Exorcist and beyond.

Don’t go into this series expecting to hear fearmongering or sensationalism; Shudder has carefully curated a dignified group of horror experts and individuals who worked firsthand on these film productions to give fans a real background and unique perspective of these “cursed films.”

Some people like to say that Satan had a hand in cursing these productions because he was ashamed of his portrayal. But as you’ll learn in The Omen episode, it may be possible that Satan blessed them instead.

Out of the two episodes made available for reviewers, I found the Poltergeist episode particularly chilling because it dove into the caustic heart of industry and audience that can’t help but find coincidences in deaths. Do we seek out these coincidences simply to help us understand death?

It is heartbreaking to hear director Gary Sherman talk about his struggle to complete Poltergeist III after the tragic death of Heather O’Rourke.

It is even sadder to remember the way her death became the stuff of urban legend rather than giving her the respect she deserved in the aftermath. Sherman talks about the difficulties of the production faced by both the cast and crew due to the media harassment they received.

The docuseries is filled with intriguing and insightful moments like this one. Though, for those who enjoy believing in the possibility of something else dwelling this earth alongside us, they don’t completely shut the door on that chance, either.
