Coming Out

Annalise deduces that it was probably Nate Lahey who provided the FBI with the arson information. So, he’s turned on her as well. This news particularly shocks Ophelia, who was convinced that Nate and Annalise were meant to be together.

Ophelia even escapes to meet Nate and confront him about taking his anger over the death of his father out on Annalise. She doesn’t realize that there’s plenty of history between the two of them to conclude in a happy relationship. When Nate returns Ophelia to Annalise, he expects him to gloat over being her under house arrest, but he’s done with all these people.

More from Show Snob

Ophelia wants Annalise to get the best lawyers to represent her, but Annalise is the best lawyer she knows. Ophelia even suggests calling her college friend Eve Rothlo (Famke Janssen), before Annalise corrects her by saying they weren’t just friends. Ophelia is stunned by this, and yet, she comes around fast enough to the idea that her daughter may have loved a woman in the past.

Ophelia still feels guilty about being away from home so long, believing her absence left the door open for Clyde to abuse Annalise. But, as Annalise rightly corrects her, Ophelia had to hold down two jobs to keep her family afloat after her husband left her. She’s not at fault – Clyde was.

Ophelia is certain that Annalise’s need to protect everyone around her comes from the lack of protection in her childhood. She thinks that’s what Annalise’s nightmares are about too – saving herself as a child. I have a feeling the child in Annalise’s dream may be Christopher, the boy who would become Wes Gibbons. We’ll have to see if that theory is correct.

Another of Ophelia’s theories – she has a lot of them – is that Clyde’s actions may have affected how Annalise connects with men. There may be some truth to that.
