9-1-1 season 3, episode 14 recap: The Taking of Dispatch 9-1-1
By Ariba Bhuvad
9-1-1 has a hostage situation on their hands–and Maddie is smack dab in the middle of it.
9-1-1 is off to a riveting start this week, picking up right where we left off last week. The call center is being held hostage by a group of men that have a grand plan–stealing expensive paintings from a museum downtown.
We have to give it to the group for this ridiculously clever and convoluted plan that they have in mind, and for almost pulling it off. It’s essentially the 9-1-1 dispatchers that take control over the terrorists but before we get there, I have to talk about how the episode played out.
The night before, Maddie and Chimney had a romantic night together in which Maddie explicitly stated that she won’t be saying “I love you”, but of course, she feels all the emotions. This is why it strikes Chimney as odd when Maddie says, “I love you Howie” right before she’s forced to hang up the phone on him.

Luckily, Chimney eventually realizes something is wrong and ropes Buck in to help him. Throughout the day, Athena was dealing with strange 9-1-1 calls and the dispatch center directing everyone to the wrong locations. At the call center, the men had the dispatchers rotating through and answering calls to divert them away from downtown where the heist was taking place.
We all know Athena is the smartest cookie on 9-1-1 and with the help of Chimney and Buck, they all figure out that something is very wrong at the dispatch center. And this is where the dispatchers being held hostage come together to save one another.
When Sue realizes that Athena has shown up at the call center to snoop around and find out what’s going on, she pretends to divert her away. Unbeknownst to the criminals, Sue tells Athena that here is a code 77, which stands for “Ambush, proceed with caution”. Clever girl.
This is enough for Athena to rally the troops to take down the men holding everyone hostage. But while she’s doing that, the men are growing impatient because the other half of their team is busy trying to get the expensive paintings out of the museum.
Side note: We are introduced to this rowdy bunch of criminals at the beginning of the episode, which includes a woman named Tiffany. Remember that name because she becomes important at the end of this episode.
Inside the call center, Sue, Maddie, and Josh work together with their co-workers to do what they could while being held hostage. One of their co-workers has an Epi-Pen, and fakes an allergic reaction, giving Maddie enough time to stab on of the men with the pen instead.
That has a domino effect across the call center as everyone starts taking down the men that have been holding them hostage. Shots are fired, scuffles take place, and before we know it, S.W.A.T storms in to handle the rest.
What I found intriguing is learning about the group’s entire plan–it was quite the elaborate one. The story starts with one of the call center’s security guards who met a woman named Tiffany through a dating app. You see, Tiffany was the mastermind behind the entire plan, and she had initially planned on using the security guard to pull off her heist. But, she fell in love with him, and instead had to find someone else to take the fall when all was said and done.
By the end of the episode, we realize everyone was planning on double-crossing each other, but no one more than Tiffany. While the rest of the men got arrested, Tiffany ran away with the security guard (who was in on it from the start and let the men into the center) with as many paintings as they could get away with.
Of course, Athena and company find Tiffany and her beau before they can get very far, and it’s off to prison for both of them. All in all, the episode is quite crazy and a whirlwind when you think about how elaborate the plan was and how it was executed–even though it was an epic fail.
But hey, Maddie, Sue, Josh, and everyone else are A-okay, and they live too see another day. I have to say Maddie has been through a lot in 9-1-1 and it seems to never stop. Here’s to hoping that she can find some calmness in her new life with Chimney (they’re officially living together!).
