The Doctor Who Holiday Special episode has been filmed, confirms co-star.

The annual Doctor Who Holiday Special episode will be back in 2020, despite the lockdowns across the world.

Mandip Gill, who plays Yasmin Khan, one of the 13th Doctor’s companions, confirmed in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that the episode had been shot before lockdowns took effect.

“I can confirm that there is a festive episode,” Gill said in the interview. “We happened to be quite lucky and fit it in, so that will be exciting.”

The Doctor Who Holiday Specials have become an iconic part of the holiday season and this news comes as a huge relief to fans who were unsure about the future of the next season.

Since the international lockdowns were announced, filming for shows across the world was shut down. Though the United Kingdom has announced some areas opening up to allow film crews to work again, restrictions are in place for the safety of everyone involved.

What Will the Doctor Who Holiday Episode Be About?

It has also been confirmed that the episode—entitled ‘Revolution of the Daleks’—will be a Christmas Special, the first to feature Jodie Whittaker’s Doctor.

The previous Holiday episode was a New Year Special, breaking a tradition that had been running since the show returned to air in 2005.

Gill shared no other details about the episode but it can be assumed that the plot will see the Doctor reunited with her companions who were separated by the Master’s (Sacha Dhawan) new scheme.

The final episodes of Doctor Who season 12 uprooted the mythos of the show—not only did it explain how the Timelords came into being but it was also revealed that the Doctor had always been the mythical Timeless Child.

The season then ended on a cliffhanger with the Doctor being arrested by the Judoon, while her companions tried to escape the Cybermen.

It is not clear yet how these plot points will be resolved in the Holiday Special, which will also see the classic Doctor Who villains, the Daleks, make another appearance since their New Year Special in 2019.

Till filming for the 13th season gets underway, fans of the show will be pleased to know that the Holiday Special will be available to tide them over.
