American Horror Stories: Will the show be more extreme than AHS?

In some surprising news, American Horror Stories, the upcoming spin-off from American Horror Story, will be moving exclusively to Hulu as part of a new “FX Originals on Hulu” line-up, it will fit in alongside other series such as Devs and Mrs. America.

The Hollywood Reporter broke the news earlier today, also announcing that the long-gestating comic book adaptation Y: The Last Man would also be moving to FX on Hulu.

Fans of the long-running horror anthology series have come to expect the unexpected on the gruesome FX show. It is rated mature and seems to be without limits in the grisly content it can show. However, if the spin-off is on Hulu, does that mean it could be even darker and gorier than its parent show?

More from American Horror Story

Hulu, Netflix, and streaming services, in general, do not have to play by the same rules as shows that air on cable and broadcast. While FX has way fewer rules than a network like The CW or NBC, it still has to work within certain restrictions.

You’re not likely to see full-frontal nudity on FX like you could on one of the premium cable services or streaming. They also have to be slightly more cautious with curse words too.

If American Horror Stories only has to contend with Hulu rules, then there is a good chance, we can anticipate much darker content. However, I’m not sure how you get more ominous than AHS, except maybe in extra bloodshed and nudity.

When will American Horror Stories premiere?

Given the pandemic and the delay on American Horror Story Season 10, it’s doubtful that we’ll see the debut of American Horror Stories until at least fall 2021, if not later than that. I would not be surprised if it were pushed back to 2022, perhaps for a summer run leading into another season of AHS.
