The Walking Dead Season 10 Episode 4: “The Whispers”

Since The Walking Dead aired Daryl has become attached to the group and become a sort of father figure for many including Judith. Once Lydia joined the group in Season 9, Daryl took on a fatherly role.

He became protective and felt responsible for her, connecting to her tragic past of losing one parent only to be abused by the other.

More from The Walking Dead

After Alpha had brutally murdered several members of the group including Carol and King Ezekiel’s son Henry, some members of Alexandria turned their anger towards Lydia. The remnants of The Highway Men take their anger to a whole new level practically beating Lydia to death until Negan intervened.

However, due to Negan accidentally killing one of The Highway Men, all of Alexandria want him dead leading to Daryl’s inner turmoil. Audiences can see Daryl’s heartbreaking upon discovering Lydia’s fragile state after the attack.

In this episode, Norman’s performance in two scenes revealed for the first time since Season 9 his inner conflict with the ever-present Negan. That while he and Maggie let him live, Daryl has yet to accept him as anything more than a monster who had killed his friends and ruined the lives of several communities.

As Daryl tries to comfort a distressed Lydia, she reveals how Negan saved her: The very last person Daryl wanted to save her.

Following this conversation, Daryl meets Negan locked in his cell. Daryl’s inner conflict reveals itself in full force mostly through stern eye contact and angered words. It’s clear that while he cannot forgive Negan for the suffering he had once caused he also did not want to harm him because of his selfless act saving Lydia.

This is something Negan also picks up on and addresses aloud. This would not be the last time Daryl and Negan would be face to face this season.
