Emily in Paris recap: Episode 5, ‘Faux Amis’
By Mads Lennon
In Emily in Paris Episode 5, Emily discovers that her growing social media following opens doors in Paris, and she talks to Gabriel about that kiss.
Emily’s French is finally beginning to improve, but not so much that she doesn’t still make the occasional serious flub — like ordering condoms alongside her breakfast croissants in Emily in Paris Episode 5.
Mindy tells her there are a lot of French words that sound like English, but really mean something else. Un crayon means pencil, not crayon, and un preservatif perimé means condoms, not jam. They’re called “faux amis” or fake friends. How fitting, then, that Camille should arrive to join them. Emily hasn’t told her about kissing Gabriel even as they become closer friends.
Further complicating matters is the fact Camille is so genuinely nice. She even invites Emily along for a date night with her and Gabriel to a gorgeous Starry Night exhibit. There, Gabriel and Emily get a moment alone. She asks why he didn’t tell her he had a girlfriend, and he says he didn’t think she’d kiss him. Emily thinks they should just forget the whole thing and assumes she made up the chemistry between them in her head.
For now, she has more important things to worry about at work. Her emilyinparis Instagram account has amassed over 20,000 followers, garnering her an invitation to an exclusive event for Durée cosmetics. As a long-time fan of their product, Emily is excited to go. Julien warns her that Durée is a former Savoir client, but that just makes Emily more eager to attend. She hopes to convince CMO Olivia (Xanthe Elbrick) to return to Savoir.
At the event, Emily impresses Olivia with a clever Instagram post using their products and earns a one-on-one lunch. When Olivia offers Emily a job as a Durée brand ambassador, Emily reveals the truth. She wants Olivia to come back to Savoir, believing Durée could benefit from a luxury marketing firm rather than continuing to depend on influencers who care more for swag bags and promoting their image than the product itself.
While Olivia remains impressed with Emily’s cleverness, there’s too much bad blood between her and Sylvie for her to return. She’d rather keep marketing in-house. Before departing, she advises Emily to watch her back.
“I know Sylvie won’t.”
Sylvie is not happy with Emily’s decision to go behind her back. She’s also not impressed by Emily’s growing social media status, especially since she marketed Durée’s product for free, which doesn’t look good to the clients who pay for their services. She demands Emily delete her account. It seems to be Sylvie’s way of punishing Emily because their latest client, Hästen’s Mattresses, liked Emily’s idea for marketing their product more than Sylvie’s.
Inspired by her trip to the Starry Night exhibit, Emily’s campaign involved placing their mattresses in popular places throughout Paris so people could pose for photo opportunities and “sleep beneath the stars” to inspire good dreams.

To celebrate her Instagram account one last time before deleting it, Mindy and Emily make a night of it. They get drunk off champagne and visit several Parisian attractions while filling up Emily’s story.
By the time she arrives back at her building, she’s too intoxicated to get the door code right. Luckily Gabriel arrives shortly after closing the restaurant to help. He also admits to Emily that it wasn’t all in her head, this thing between them.
The next day, Sylvie confronts Emily about her final Instagram post before deactivating. The location appealed to Hästen’s and now she wants Emily to set up a mattress there, and be the first to pose for a photograph. Emily is officially an influencer now.
Sylvie is forced to let Emily continue emilyinparis, but does tell her to keep it strictly for their clients.
Emily invites Camille to attend the mattress photo shoot so she can see her inspiration at work. Camille admits she thought Emily was upset with her after the previous night and thinks it’s because of Gabriel. She says he’s always tense with new people but will warm up to her after he gets to know her better. Well, ain’t that the truth.
“If you say so,” says Emily.
Then they pose in the bed together for a cute photo update, #getinbedwithus. Outside his restaurant, Gabriel sees the pic and gives it a like. Ménage à trois?
