In a world where happiness is a rare commodity, Fear The Walking Dead gives us something to smile about.

Fear The Walking Dead has officially made a place for itself in the number one spot for my favorite The Walking Dead universe series. I believe the flagship series has struggled a bit these last few years, and they still have quite a way to go before they officially wrap, so the verdict is out on that one. And as far as The Walking Dead: World Beyond goes, that series isn’t really on my radar at all. Perhaps eventually, but for now, it’s living on struggle central.

In any case, this week’s episode of Fear The Walking Dead was quite a thrill, and while it gave us some solid scares along the way, it ended on an absolutely wonderful note that I can’t wait to dig into a bit more during this recap.

This week’s anthology format brought us up to date with Dwight (Austin Amelio) and Al’s (Maggie Grace) whereabouts. I don’t know what changed, but there’s something different about Dwight, something that is undeniably attractive and appealing. I found myself drawn to him more than usual during this week’s episode, and while I haven’t figured it out yet, I’m so here for it.

Fear The Walking Dead Season 6, Episode 3 recap: Al + Dwight = BFFS

It’s a welcome change to see Dwight and Al smiling, and as jarring as it is, it feels nice to see them getting along so well. Their relationship has evolved into a sort of brother/sister bond, and it’s clear as soon as we see them that they have each other’s backs.

More from The Walking Dead

Quite humorously (or morbid, depending on how you look at it), they made a game out of collecting driver’s licenses from the walkers they encountered. The goal is to collect one from every state, which I don’t believe will be a very difficult task given how many walkers are roaming about.

But while things feel more lighthearted, there are also secrets between them that they’re choosing not to elaborate on. For Al, it’s Isabelle, and while Dwight knows about her, he doesn’t know much more than that. And Al doesn’t intend on telling him much about CRM (Civic Republic Military), at least not yet.

*Shout-out to some CRM overlap between Fear and World Beyond this week!

Of course, right when the topic of Isabelle is something that they’d rather be ignorant about, Al hears her voice over the radio. As such, it becomes obvious that they are near a CRM drop zone, which is reachable by nightfall. At this point, Dwight isn’t too convinced he’ll ever find Sherry again, and as such he thinks they should go to this drop zone.

Unfortunately, this drop zone is not exactly the easiest place to get to because it’s on top of a tall building’s rooftop, which you can only get to by walking all the way up (elevators don’t work in the apocalypse anymore).

Fear The Walking Dead Season 6, Episode 3 recap: The bubonic plague

Ugh, yes, you read that right. The bubonic plague. The very same plague that reminds you of rabid rats carrying a disease from the Middle Ages that absolutely no one wants to get. I know you all remember the history books from school that talked about this plague, it was not pretty.

In any case, on their way towards the rooftop, Dwight and Al come across a group that’s apparently been infected with the bubonic plague. To make matters worse, there are infected rats inside the building. Given that we’re still in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, this story feels a bit too real for my liking.

Al and Dwight have a bit of a disagreement on how to handle the entire situation. Al thinks they should push on in pursuit of Isabelle while Dwight thinks they may be of assistance to those infected with the plague. But to Al’s point, there isn’t much they can do because, without medications, these guys are basically SOL. Plus, the leader, Nora (Devyn Tyler), wasn’t too eager to have them there in the first place. I think I side with Dwight on this one given the CRM murdered one of Nora’s group members for simply being on the roof.

Unfortunately for Dwight, Al won this battle and the two of them forge ahead towards the rooftop. I’d like to take a moment to say that I haven’t felt so uncomfortable during a scene as I did during this week’s episode. On their way up to the rooftop, Al and Dwight had to go through a tunnel FILLED WITH RATS only to arrive on a floor FILLED WITH WALKERS.

As they tried to find a place to hide in the bathroom, they both realize that Dwight has the plague because he was bitten by a rat that made its way into his sleeping bag. Not exactly the best circumstances to be under, is it? In any case, Al convinces Dwight to head back towards Virginia to get some antibiotics while she tries to locate Isabelle, and hopefully leave with her.

Fear The Walking Dead Season 6, Episode 3 recap: A reunion years in the making

No, I’m not referring to Al and Isabelle. Unfortunately, these two don’t come together after all as Al makes sure that Isabelle doesn’t get anywhere near the rat-infested building. Isabelle doesn’t realize that she’s been talking to Al this entire time (that’s kind of sad, right?), but she does let her know that there is a crate of beer there on the rooftop. And lo and behold, it ALSO has antibiotics.

Hip, hip, hooray! No more bubonic plague!

Alls well that ends well as Dwight and the fellow infected folks all get their dose of the antibiotic (apparently, it happens to be the one they needed?), and are saved from the wrath of the bubonic plague. And in the midst of this great find, a voice is heard over the radio, a very familiar, Sherry-like voice, that is.

Apparently, she had seen the flare that Al had sent up earlier, and was wondering if anyone was in need of help. Oh yes, they are Sherry, and that someone would be your husband, Dwight! Running outside, Dwight and Sherry finally come face-to-face after what feels like years (I guess it has been at this point) and have a reunion for the ages.

I’m not sure when we’ll catch up with them again, but for now, I’m so happy to know they are back together once again! Love wins, folks, love wins!
