Fear The Walking Dead Season 6 has not been afraid to make some risky moves during this season, and this week’s episode is a stark and heartbreaking reminder of just that.

Fear The Walking Dead Season 6 has been quite a marvelous season as the series has tested the waters with a character(s) specific anthology format. At first, I presumed that it would not be much different than seasons past as they’ve often chosen to focus on one or only a handful of people at a time. However, there is something different about this season, in particular, and I find that they’ve really been able to flesh out the nuances of their characters better than ever before.

In the latest episode, “Bury Her Next to Jasper’s Leg”, the story focuses on John (Garrett Dillahunt) and June (Jenna Elfman), and touches a bit on Luciana’s (Danay Garcia) whereabouts. As we’ve come to understand, the group is more or less under the forceful watch of Virginia (Colby Minifie).

She’s basically the Negan of the series, except and perhaps slightly scarier. I’m not sure what it is given Minifie is usually playing a comedic role in her other stuff, but she pulls off a villain so well in Fear The Walking Dead.

As of late, Virginia’s focus has been on hunting down the group that is painting “The End Is The Beginning” everywhere. She and her cronies are seen running after a woman at the start of the episode, but quickly learn that whoever “they” are will not give up so easily.

In fact, instead of revealing any information at all, the woman kills herself before anyone else can.

And then, she’s buried next to Jasper’s leg.

Cue credits, and what happens to be a very heartbreaking episode on Fear The Walking Dead Season 6. This may change the pace of where this season is heading and make for some dramatic twists and turns, especially when we hone in on John Dorie and June’s journey ever since they reunited, got married, and embarked on whatever this part of the story will be referred to–the Virginia Chronicles, perhaps?

Fear The Walking Dead Season 6, Episode 6 recap: To leave or not to leave

Since Janis’ death, John has been a bit off. It’s still hard to comprehend just why she meant so much to him, but something has definitely changed within him since her unexpected death. He wants to break free of Virginia’s rule and just run–away from it all.

If you recall, when we first met John, we learned of his cabin tucked away in the woods and how he and June first met. His recent trials and tribulations are pulling him back towards that life, but unfortunately, this episode proves June is not on the same page as him.

She’s been busy trying to save lives with Sarah’s (Mo Collins) help, but with just the two of them, they’re stretched quite thin. June was hopeful that Ginny would perhaps take mercy on her and Sarah, and the people in need and provide a space to build a hospital. But this is Ginny we’re talking about who had already rejected the notion.

Angry and frustrated, June shares her thoughts with John, who has been looking for any reason to high tail it out of the mess they’re in. He suggests they just leave, and head to his cabin, which is only 100 miles away from where they are now. One look at June’s face tells the tale of a woman who isn’t thinking about running away, but rather looking to do her best to help anyone she can.

She reminds him that their friends are still out there and that she has people she’d like to help.

And in a case of emotional blackmail at its finest (or worst), John simply tells her that she can help him. But she’s not having it, and the conversation sort of hits a dead end there–for the time being.

The conversation is cut short when Luciana radios in to say that there has been a horrible accident back at Tank Town, and their help is needed. That sort of is the nail in the coffin of the whole “let’s run away” conversation as they rush over to find out what’s happened.

Apparently, one of the newer wells had exploded, and more were in danger of blowing up as well. It is quite a gruesome scene as injured and very burnt people are lying everywhere. Maybe it was the devastating sight of all these people that prompted June to say what she does next, but whatever it was, she tells John they will leave as soon as they help everyone here.

It gives John some hope as everyone gets to work helping whoever they can. Well, actually, not quite, because as soon as Ginny sees that someone has painted that darn “The End is the Beginning” slogan on one of the tanks, she’s deadset on questioning everyone. She doesn’t care if they’re injured, dying, or both, she wants to know who is responsible.

Wes (Colby Holman) is her number one focus after her Rangers find paint supplies amongst his stuff. He insisted he was not to blame and didn’t know about the “they” Ginny kept referring to. Having had enough of this torture, June ignores Ginny’s wishes and sedates Wes so they can treat him and take out all the shrapnel in his body. Come on, Ginny–have a heart!

As Wes is carted off to the ambulance, Ginny and June get stuck behind when yet another explosion causes them to be caved in under all this rubble. Is it bad that I love to hate Ginny, and was secretly hoping she didn’t die?

When June and Ginny come to, it’s discovered that Ginny had been bit, and the only way she could potentially be saved is via amputation. But this is June’s chance to get Ginny out of their lives once and for all, and she declines to provide any help, well, at first.

Fear The Walking Dead Season 6, Episode 6 recap: An amputation for a hospital

For a while there, I didn’t believe June was actually going to help Ginny at all. Letting her die seemed to be the solution to all their problems, especially for John. But when Ginny pleads with June to look after her sister Dakota, June’s heart melts and she proceeds with amputating Ginny’s arm.

But this stroke of being a Good Samaritan didn’t come without its demands. In exchange for saving Ginny’s life, June demanded that she get the hospital she’s been asking for. Of course, everyone else is frazzled by the fact that June let Ginny live, but June saw an opportunity to do good here, and she couldn’t pass that up.

Plus, she convinced Ginny to let one more person join their efforts–Wendell (Daryl Mitchell)! It was so nice to see Wendell and Sarah reunite, and in an episode that sort of had its dark moments and even ended with one, I was happy to find myself smiling.

Unfortunately, this change of plans didn’t quite suit John’s plans to run away with June. So he did the unfathomable (seriously, I didn’t think he really would), and drove off in a different direction as the rest of them went off to look for a site for the hospital.

Dang, I never thought we’d see the day that John would willingly leave June behind, but it’s happened, and now I have no idea what comes next on Fear The Walking Dead Season 6.
