TNT has renewed Animal Kingdom for a sixth and final season.

It’s time to say goodbye to the Cody family. According to Deadline, TNT has renewed the popular crime drama Animal Kingdom for a sixth and final season ahead of its upcoming Season 5 premiere.

The good news is that the cast and crew were made aware of this decision this past November. While it’s sad to see the series coming to an end, it sounds like the production team will have ample time to prepare a good ending to the Cody family saga.

Why is Animal Kingdom ending?

Considering Animal Kingdom has remained consistent in ratings throughout its four-season run and even ranked among the top 10 cable dramas in 2019, it’s a little surprising to see TNT pulling the plug on the series. Deadline doesn’t specify an exact reason as to why the show is ending, but it sounds like it was a mutual decision behind-the-scenes.

The outlet notes that TNT is slowly shifting its focus to more unscripted content “to compliment the WarnerMedia network’s sports slate.” The cable channel’s other popular scripted series, Claws, is also coming to a close. Once both shows finish, Snowpiercer will be the only scripted show left on the network.

When is Animal Kingdom returning?

Animal Kingdom Season 5 does not yet have a return date, but previous seasons have debuted in late May or early June. The fifth season has already been filmed, so it’s just a matter of TNT deciding when to schedule it.

Per Deadline, the cabler is planning to schedule it for a summer run like seasons past. We can likely anticipate a late May premiere date. While fans await the fifth season, the cast and crew will likely be filming Season 6, which will likely start production in February.

How can you catch up on Animal Kingdom before it returns?

If you want to watch Animal Kingdom for the first time or catch up with it before Season 5 premieres this summer, you can do so now through Amazon Prime Video. Those without a subscription can purchase the series through digital retailers like iTunes, Amazon and Vudu.
