Barbara Gordon has been found for Titans Season 3! Who is Savannah Welch, and what can we expect from her take on the character?

Exciting news about Titans Season 3—Savannah Welch has been cast as Commissioner Barbara Gordon for the show, Variety reports. During DC FanDome, Barbara Gordon’s appearance in the next season had been confirmed, and now we finally know who is playing her. Welch’s casting news comes on the heels of more revelations about the next season of the show, including Starfire’s new suit and Jason Todd’s upcoming arc as Red Hood.

Titans Season 3 has been in production in Toronto, Canada, during the pandemic. Still, we don’t yet know whether filming has been completed or when the season will be available on HBO Max.

Titans Season 3: Why fans should be excited about Welch’s casting

There has been much speculation about what role Barbara Gordon will be playing in Titans Season 3, but Welch’s casting clarifies some of that.

Barbara Gordon has been a popular character in the DC Comics, taking on the moniker of Batgirl to fight alongside Batman and Robin. Her mission, like theirs, was to protect Gotham City. As the daughter of Commissioner Jim Gordon, Barbara also tried to make a difference outside the suit.

In the infamous The Killing Joke, Barbara was attacked by the Joker, which resulted in a spine injury. As a wheelchair-user, Barbara became the superhero Oracle, a tech genius who worked beside several teams to protect Gotham City.

Welch, an amputee and an advocate for the disability community, will most likely be taking on Oracle’s role, which is exciting news for fans.

Oracle remains one of the rare characters representing the disability community—seeing her in live-action could be the start of a positive trend towards including members of a marginalized community that has actively been advocating for visibility in the entertainment industry.

There have also been hints that Titans Season 3 will explore Barbara and Dick Grayson’s (Brenton Thwaites) past romantic relationship.

Barbara and Dick are a much-loved DC Comics couple, almost on par with Dick and Kory Anders (Anna Diop), and it will be interesting to see how the show handles these romances.

Titans has been better at representation than many superhero shows—the show has a racially-diverse cast and included deaf, trans actor Chella Man in Jericho’s role in Season 2. Now with Welch, the show is making another positive step towards representation. May other shows follow suit!
