The Mandalorian Season 3: 5 actors who could play Cara Dune
By Louis Skye
Gina Carano, the actor who played Cara Dune in The Mandalorian, has been fired by Lucasfilm following disturbing posts on social media, Deadline reports. She has made controversial statements online before. She previously made several anti-mask posts, mocked Twitter users for adding pronouns in their bios—despite being educated otherwise by co-star Pedro Pascal—and questioned lockdown procedures.
Star Wars fans have been asking for her to be replaced for a year now, and it seems Carano’s anti-semitic comments have finally pushed Lucasfilm to cut ties with the actor.
It’s unclear what will happen to Cara Dune. The character was a crucial part of the first two seasons of The Mandalorian and was expected to play a significant role in the Rangers of the Republic spin-off.
Lucasfilm and Disney Plus still have time to decide what will happen to the character. Many viewers are asking for Cara Dune to be killed off before the next season of the show. Others have suggested moving Cara away from the main narrative.
But there is another option—recasting the character with a different actor.
Should Cara Dune be Recast?
The world of entertainment has recast notable roles several times over the years. How many Marvel Cinematic Universe fans remember that Don Cheadle wasn’t the original actor playing James Rhodes/War Machine? But the actor has made the role his own and will lead a new Marvel show soon.

While killing Cara Dune off-screen makes the most sense, the character means a great deal to many Star Wars fans.
Cara’s story is powerful and relatable. A former Rebel trooper, Cara took became a mercenary until she met Din Djarin and Grogu. She teamed up with the pair to protect the people of Nevarro, and later met Greef Karga, another associate of Din’s. Cara eventually became a Marshal for the New Republic.
But what makes Cara stand out is that she is one of the few Alderaanians left alive. She wasn’t on Alderaan when the Empire destroyed her home planet, but she did lose everyone, just as Princess Leia had. Having no home and avenging her loss is a story that resonates with many.
This is why many viewers would like Lucasfilm and Disney Plus to cast the role with another actor who will make Cara Dune their own.
Who could play Cara Dune in The Mandalorian Season 3?
It may be too soon to fan cast Cara Dune, but that hasn’t stopped Star Wars and The Mandalorian fans from sharing their top picks to take over the role.
Here are the five actors who could play Cara Dune in The Mandalorian Season 3.
Laverne Cox
Netflix’s Orange is the New Black brought Laverne Cox onto many people’s radar. Playing Sophia Burset, Cox brought trans issues to the fore and has used her platform to bring awareness ever since.
The trans actor has been a vocal advocate for her community and produced Disclosure, a documentary about transgender stories in Hollywood.
Cox can add emotional layers to Cara Dune, which had been missing in Carano’s performance. Fans of Cox’s work have noted that she can play everything from drama to comedy, and that’s the kind of revamp Cara deserves.
Antje Traue
German actor Antje Traue won’t have any problem stepping into Cara Dune’s physicality—she stole the show as the vicious bad*ss Faora-Ul in Man of Steel.
She can also bring a dose of suspense and a ton of heart to the role if her performance as Agnes Nielsen in Netflix’s Dark is anything to go by. We can certainly see Traue making the role her own.
Frankie Adams
The Expanse star is another one on our list who will have no problems with the physical aspects of the Cara Dune role. She has a boxing background and plenty of action scenes on The Expanse.
Adams also has the range to play a down-and-out former Rebel with a haunted past, as fans have seen in her performance as Bobbie Draper.
She is a bit young for the role, but that clearly doesn’t matter in The Mandalorian, so we could let that go.
Lucy Lawless
Geeks around the world know Lucy Lawless as the fearless warrior princess, Xena. Lawless has the acting chops—she can do drama and comedy—and has proven action skills.
Plus, she’s a highly political figure who hasn’t been shy taking down problematic fellow actors for airing disturbing views.
Lawless would be the full package who could bring pathos to Cara Dune while delivering on action scenes.
Gina Torres
Anybody who’s watched Firefly knows that Gina Torres was one of the highlights of the show. Torres has a vast filmography, appearing in a number of procedural shows, so she certainly has the dramatic abilities to pull off Cara Dune’s role.
Plus, Torres already has a Star Wars connection—she voiced Ketsu Onyo, Sabine Wren’s friend on Star Wars: Rebels. Katee Sackhoff has transitioned from Star Wars voice artist to The Mandalorian actor, so why not Torres?
