5 spooky shows that are streaming to get you in the fall mood

You know it’s that time of year when the leaves begin to change, there’s a slight chill in the air, and suddenly your sweater that’s been sitting on the corner of your desk chair for months looks mighty enticing.

Well, maybe we’re not really there yet, because it’s still ridiculously hot where I live. But it is August, and when it’s August, that means it’s time for me to revisit some of my favorite spooky shows that are available to stream because it gets me into the fall mood. These are my top five.

The Haunting of Hill House

Honestly, anything that Mike Flanagan was a part of is guaranteed to be spooky, but my absolute favorite is, by far, The Haunting of Hill House. Based on the Shirley Jackson novel of the same name, The Haunting of Hill House follows a family who comes back together when their youngest suddenly passes and how it’s all connected to the family house that haunts their nightmares.

I can’t even get into how much I freaking love this show. The first time I watched it, it felt like I had only just learned what goosebumps were, because no other series in the horror genre compared to the story I was given and the amazing connections it made. Even now, years after it released, I still rewatch it, and I am still just as entertained and freaked out as before.

If you’ve never seen The Haunting of Hill House, seriously do yourself a favor and check it out. It’s only ten episodes, and if you happen to like Flanagan’s style, he has several other Netflix shows to check out too. You can watch it on Netflix.

American Horror Story: Coven

While it feels like American Horror Story is the series that never truly dies (which is the real horror story), there is no denying that the earlier seasons were killer (pun intended). The season I always watch around Halloween is Coven, which is very witchy. It takes place in New Orleans and follows the story of a coven and how their leader is losing her power.

There are a lot of other subplots, as is the case with a lot of Ryan Murphy shows, but they all fit with that scary, spooky theme that we love so dearly. I’m sure the updates for season 13 have been fun considering it’s supposed to be a continuation of Coven, but I like to return to the original all the time. You can watch the season on Hulu.

The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina

I will quite literally never forgive Netflix for canceling this show so early because it combined two things that I love—witches and Ross Lynch.

But on a real note, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, based on the comic series of the same name, follows the titular character, Sabrina, around the time of her 16th birthday, when she must make a decision—keep her friends and abandon the world of sorcery, or lose her friends and become a full witch. And of course, this does not sit well with her, which causes shenanigans.

Surprisingly, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina gets dark during a lot of moments. There’s a lot of good commentary about death and how we grieve, but the series itself also has really great acting and super fun magic sequences. And with the adorable black cat to go along with it, you can’t get spookier than this. You can view it on Netflix.

Supernatural

Sometimes, it baffles me that Supernatural ran for fifteen seasons. But then I remember just how good it was.

For those who don’t know, Supernatural is one of those shows that’s just spooky all the time. The series follows Dean and Sam (Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki), two brothers who follow in their father’s footsteps and hunt down demons, bad spirits, and other evil things to protect the world.

I could go on and on about this series because every episode is so fun. There are even some perfect ones to watch for Halloween when the holiday rolls around. But really, what makes you come back every time is the chemistry between Ackles and Padalecki. You really can’t get better than these two brothers. You can stream it on Amazon Prime.

The Last of Us

Last but certainly not least, I have to give a shoutout to The Last of Us, which you can watch over at HBO Max. The series is based on the video game franchise of the same name and follows survivor Joel as he transports a young teenager across the United States with the hope that she might be the cure for a twenty-year apocalypse.

You’ll find out that I have an unhealthy obsession with The Last of Us and have for many, many years. The show is a great adaptation of that. While I do think that season 2 isn’t nearly as good as season 1, there is still plenty here that makes it truly one of the spookiest shows to watch because how much spookier can you get than literal zombies? And all different kinds? I’m scared just thinking about it. There are even other shows like The Last of Us you can check out if you love it.

Now that spooky season is slowly approaching, these are just some of the best shows to check out. Now, if you don’t mind me, I’m going to go and rewatch The Last of Us to prep for my own festivities.
