We are living in an age where video games are getting some fantastic adaptations. We finished Fallout season 2 some time ago and are waiting for the next season. God of War’s adaptation is happening over at Prime Video. HBO's The Last of Us is incredible! Netflix’s video game adaptations have been taking over the world, and we still have Assassin’s Creed and more in the works over there.
It’s truly a great time to be a gamer who also loves TV and movies. What are some other video games or franchises that should be adapted into a TV show or movie? I have some ideas, and I need to share them.
Let's get the list started with Grand Theft Auto.
Grand Theft Auto
Okay, hear me out. I’m not saying that we somehow shove every single story of Grand Theft Auto into one series or movie. That would be ridiculous. I mean, if we wanted to get crazy, we could release a season that covers each new game. There will be six games, with the latest release, so it could be done that way.
However, if we did a single show or movie, we could take one incredibly popular story (maybe one from Vice City or Los Santos) and adapt the main story while adding Easter eggs in other locations or names. I feel like there is so much lore to this series that we would never get to see, so why not build a show or movie from it?
This is one of those games that had those giants manuals back then to tell you what to do. There is so much to work with. I can’t think of a better franchise for this.
Undertale
I think Undertale would make a great TV show — specifically an animated series. I would never want a live-action adaptation. That sounds terrible, but I could easily see someone animating this.
The basic premise of Undertale, if you don’t know it, is that a young kid falls into the Underground, which just so happens to be run by monsters, and now they have to find their way out. But the game is so much more than that, and it has a huge fanbase. I completed it a year ago and still listen to its soundtrack daily.
It is an indie game, so the chances of it truly becoming an adaptation are slim. But a girl can dream.
Skyrim
There are so many fantasy shows out there that it feels only right to include Skyrim on here. This part of the Elder Scrolls series is huge. Fans are still waiting for a sequel to this day, but it is so beloved, and there is so much lore.
Like, if you thought the world of Game of Thrones was intense with its political landscapes, betrayals, and all that jazz, you haven’t even experienced the utter wackiness of Skyrim and how well it would translate to a TV show.
The game is visually stunning, with so many branching paths and stories for players to explore. While it would be difficult to fit all of that into a film or even a TV show, it would still make for a great series.
The Diablo franchise
As a gamer, one genre I love is action RPGs, and a game I’ve always enjoyed is Diablo, which has a lot of lore and is really freaking fun. The original premise is that it’s about a main character going through dungeons to go straight to hell, looking for the titular character, Diablo. Really, most of the games are pretty similar in fighting styles, but the stories interconnect and go at different paces. And everything just gets darker and more insane.
The games have a lot of interesting, complex characters that make the story even more enjoyable, and there’s plenty of lore that could easily be used for a television series or a movie. It would be the kind of adventure that fans love, and with some scary demons added to the mix, horror fans would be pleased as well.
Red Dead Redemption
The last game on my list is Red Dead Redemption. This open-world series mainly focuses on the story of John Marston, the people around him, and the Wild West. The soundtrack is phenomenal, and the gameplay is great, but what really makes it better is the character development.
You absolutely fall in love with these characters, and there are so many different directions creators could go. I think that as a Western video game, this could easily become a big HBO Max show or something along those lines. I know I would sit down and enjoy it whenever I could.
Now this makes me want to play every video game out there. Ugh, I need to dust off my console.
