When a streaming service debuts a new series these days, you never really know what the future might hold. The series could be canceled after one season, a second season could be renewed months later, it might retroactively be deemed a miniseries, or any other conclusion that can range from frustrating to unexpected to exciting. Thankfully, for Hulu's Furious, it's "exciting."
Just a few days before the season 1 finale releases on Monday, Aug. 31, Hulu made the early announcement that Furious season 2 was officially renewed and will bring series star and executive producer Emmy Rossum back as Alice Black. The series, which is based on the 1987 film Black Widow, made its premiere this summer and has been steadily increasing its profile.
On top of achieving a near-perfect rating on Rotten Tomatoes thanks to its stellar reviews from critics, Furious has also been garnering a sizable viewership under the radar. As a global release on Hulu and Disney+ with a weekly cadence that helped attain positive word-of-mouth, the series has clearly hit the necessary numbers to earn a swift renewal for a second season.
Furious season 2 will likely give Alice Black a new case
If you have been keeping up with Furious week-to-week, you're probably wondering how a second season would work and whether the story of the first season will be stretched into the next. Well, that probably won't be the case, but season 2 is still in the early stages of development. There's no official word yet on what a second season will entail, though the season 1 finale could shed some light.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Rossum will reprise her role as Alice Black, who is expected to tackle a brand-new case in the second season. Since the renewal arrived before the first season finale, it's unknown whether Alice's new case will be seeded at the end of the debut season or if there will be any cliffhangers, loose ends, or teases for the character's path ahead.
Given the themes that have been the driving force of Furious, the follow-up season, and any other season that might follow in the future, creator Elizabeth Meriwether will surely remain focused on Alice Black exploring violence and trauma as it pertains to cases involving female serial killers, while also remaining fresh and inventive without continuing to cover the same ground.
The renewal of Furious season 2 comes on the heels of Meriwether's previous successful collaborations with Hulu, the limited series The Dropout and Dying For Sex. Both of the series earned Emmy Award nominations for Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series and won awards for their stars Amanda Seyfried and Michelle Williams. Rossum could very well continue this trend.
Furious season 2 also marks the biggest recent renewal out of Hulu, especially after the streaming service canceled the Mindy Kaling comedy Not Suitable for Work after one season. Meriwether is also writing the script for the upcoming Britney Spears biopic from Universal and director Jon M. Chu, though it's unclear if that film's process will interfere at all with her show's second season.
Hopefully, we won't have to wait too long for Alice Black to return to our screens in Furious season 2, though Hulu hasn't indicated a release window just yet. Stay tuned for more details!
