So many streaming shows are returning with new seasons in 2027, and HBO's The Pitt is one that’s highly anticipated. Thankfully, we have an update on filming — and what to expect in season 3.
On the red carpet for the 2026 Primetime Emmy Awards, actress Fiona Dourif was interviewed by Deadline. Known for her portrayal of Dr. Cassie McKay in The Pitt, she was asked how filming was going and what she could tease about the third season, and her answer is everything a fan would want to hear and more:
“We’re shooting episode 7. I work tomorrow morning at 9. So yeah, we’re in the thick of it… I heard the sound mixer say they thought season 3 so far is better than season 2.”

Honestly, this isn’t that shocking. A teaser for The Pitt season 3 has already dropped, showing what they have filmed. If they’re working on episode 7, they have a lot of work to do before the premiere in January 2027. HBO Max already confirmed the release window for the new season.
At the 2026 Primetime Emmy Awards, The Pitt once again won Outstanding Drama Series, along with another win for Noah Wyle as Dr. Robby. So far, it’s been two years in a row. If that sound mixer is right, we could see a three-peat. Which, honestly, would be amazing, as it feels like it’s been forever since a single drama has taken that prestigious honor every time.
What to expect in The Pitt season 3
The Pitt season 3 will have a lot to cover if it wants to be as good as the last two seasons. The next episodes will take place several months after Robby’s planned sabbatical, and this time, we’ll be in the cold weather, specifically in November. That means black-ice accidents, exploding heaters, and other winter-only mishaps.
And trust me, as a Pennsylvania girl, I can tell you the winters here can get surprisingly cold, especially in Pittsburgh.
The season's end also left many open questions that season 3 needs to answer. Will we see more of the night-shift workers? What happened to that adorable baby that Robby was holding at the very end of the season? How will all the newly recurring cast members (reported by Deadline) fit into everything? I’m so curious.
A main character will also be notably missing: Supriya Ganesh as Dr. Samira Mohan. While there’s been some drama surrounding her exit, Wyle explained at a panel at PaleyFest 2026 (via Variety) that that’s just the case with emergency room doctors and that there’s a constant rotation:
“It’s an inevitability that’s going to happen every season with this show because as writers we’re hard pressed to figure out what a lapse of time we can have and keep most of the ensemble together realistically. Emergency rooms have a high revolving door. As always, we try to bring in new characters or promote from within as we go through these cast changes and try to keep the storylines fresh, but obviously Supriya has been a huge part of our show since the beginning.”
It’s going to shift the dynamic of certain characters without her there. It’s not the first time that The Pitt has lost characters for a certain reason. Dr. Collins (Tracy Ifeachor) stepped away from the hospital, but that was because it was the last year of her residency, and she decided to be closer to her family at a hospital in Portland. This is just the lay of the land.
Even so, with some characters leaving and others sticking around, it makes you wonder what season 3 will bring if people are already saying it might be better than season 2.
Personally, I don’t know how The Pitt can keep up with the variety each season because how many times can you run into such a wide range of injuries? It’s almost astounding — and impressive — that people end up in these situations. But with the winter months coming, anything can happen. With filming well underway and nearing completion, I can’t wait to see what happens next.
