By Josh Hill
Many fans are wondering about the second season of the hit HBO series True Detective, as the list of questions about what the show will be about is long and complicated.

But one question is quite simple on the surface — what will the tone of the show be? There has been a lot of trolling going on in regards to the cast of the show, as you can’t count how many True Detective romantic comedy posters have been drawn up. But the trolls actually raise a relevant question in wondering what the tone will be.
One route could be to make the show a black comedy in the same vein as In Bruges or have darkly comedic tones of a Quentin Tarantino film. If Pizzolatto is that deep about his story, having it be a black comedy isn’t out of the question, as it would certainly make season two different from season one.
What fans don’t want is something derivative of the first season, which is a fine line to tread if you’re Pizzolatto. But he doesn’t have to sacrifice the dark tone of the show just to make it different from what we’ve already seen. The dark tone was what helped make the show the special thing that it was last year, so returning to that could be a naturally choice for Pizzolatto.
