Colin Farrell is leading the cast of the new season, and he’s been subject to a lot of criticism thanks to just accepting the role. True Detective fans have high expectations, and that has led to a majority of the hate towards Farrell but is it all justified? For all we know, the casting of Farrell is going to be brilliant and could make everyone at HBO look like geniuses.
It’s not that hard to fathom either, as thinking up some solid reasons why Farrell is perfect for True Detective isn’t that hard to do.
His Acting Range is Crazy
Farrell has a deep filmography of work that has showcased his various talents and his range. From serious dramas like Tigerland and Phone Booth to bizarre roles like The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnasus and even comedic turns like Horrible Bosses and In Bruges, Farrell has range.
That’s all going to come into play for True Detective as we know very little about his character but his range leaves the door open for any number of directions he can take this role.
Expectations are High
One thing that we know about Farrell is that he takes his craft seriously. He was under scrutiny in the mid-2000s for not living up to where he should be and he stepped up his game. He came out with almost a reinvention of himself with comedic turns in Horrible Bosses, In Bruges and Seven Psychopaths.
What this did was not only display his range, but also his willingness to branch out in his career and try new things. with expectations so high for True Detective, we can fully expect Farrell to take this role seriously and turn out the best performance that he can.
He’s an A-List talent
Like how Farrell seems to thrive when he’s under pressure, the bottom line is that he’s an A-List talent and will be expected to bring that type of game to True Detective. While Matthew McConaughey surpassed out expectations, his status as a Hollywood star brought a certain amount of expectation to the role.
It’s like putting your ace pitcher on the mound in a big game — nothing is promised but at the end of the day you feel like you have the right guy out there. Farrell brings a certain amount of talent to the table and that’s the floor of his expectations in True Detective.
