Will True Detective Season 2 plagiarize itself?
By Josh Hill
The second season of True Detective is right around the corner but fans are already having reservations about what we will see. A lot of that has to do with the cast of the series, but there are lots of reasons to go easy on the show from that perspective — at least right now.

A far more troubling pitfall could be a possible derivative nature that the shows takes on, meaning it could end up following too closely in the footsteps of the first season in both tone and structure.
So far, what we’ve heard seems to suggest enough changes to make the show stand out on its own but we can’t say for certain until the show debuts. The number of lead characters right away suggests that there will be a shift in narrative, which is the biggest way the show can be derivative of itself in season two.
But given how successful the first season was, it’s not hard to fall back on tropes that will make the two seasons feel too similar, After all, the first season was loaded with buddy-cop cliches, it’s just McConaughey and Harrelson were too good for us to care. It’s a thin line that Nic Pizzolatto is walking, but until he screws up — which he hasn’t yet — he has earned the benefit of the doubt for now.
