David Fincher says this is the ‘Golden Age’ of television
By Josh Hill
True Detective is one of the best shows to have premiered in a long time, but it’s not the only hit show out there. In fact, it’s not even the best show out there which is saying a lot. But what True Detective represents is another blow to the world of cinema as one of the most prolific directors of the last 30 years has endorsed another medium.

Fincher told The Daily Telegraph that this is indeed the Golden Age of television — which is a significant moment in entertainment history.
"“They call it the golden age of television. Right now people are discovering television because it’s where all the most interesting characters have gone.”"
This is big for a few different reasons. The main reason is that Fincher is likely going to be up for an Oscar this year after his work on Gone Girl, but he’s fully endorsing television as a storytelling medium. That’s not to say film directors have never respected television, but to have perhaps one of the greatest directors alive admit that television is where the most interesting characters are is big.
Of course, Fincher has a dog in this fight with House of Cards but it’s still a pretty seminal moment in the current movement we’re seeing in television. Movies can still reign supreme, but they’re day is done and television has officially taken over as the go-to medium for the best storytelling out there.
