Stop comparing Matthew McConaughey Lincoln commercials to True Detective
By Josh Hill
The second season of the hit HBO series True Detective is right around the corner and that means we’re going to start hearing more and more about the new season. But it’s the old season we still can’t stop talking about and that’s largely due to Matthew McConaughey’s performance.

He narrowly missed an Emmy win this year and had he not been lined up against Bryan Cranston in his last year of being eligible for Breaking Bad, then he may have won. But the popularity of his character on True Detective has expanded out interest in not only Rust Cohle but in McConaughey as well.
The actor was recently featured in some Lincoln car commercial ads that drew comparisons to True Detective — which is really stupid for a number of reasons.
Perhaps the first and foremost reason is that by saying the Lincoln commercial is just McConaughey doing a Rust impression is massively insulting to his performance and the writing on the show. Basically, everyone who thinks that is saying True Detective’s writing and acting is no better than that of a car commercial.
That’s not a stretch either — it’s exactly what that means.
It’s cool that McConaughey is getting all the love he’s getting and that he’s so synonymous with True Detective, but you don’t go walking around saying Bryan Cranston is just doing Walter White impressions and the same goes for McConaughey’s performance as Rust.
