Does True Detective Season 2 Need A Trio of Lead Characters?

With True Detective nearing an eventual production start, the questions fans are starting to raise are beginning to branch off of simply who will be in the cast to things like what the make up of the cast should be. While there has been a lot mad about the genders of the lead roles and what they should be, there’s also something to be said about he number of leads as well since every little thing needs to be right for this upcoming season.

In the first season we saw a dynamic duo of Rust and Marty, which was excellent because the interaction between the two different characters was fresh and full of tension which helped keep things interesting. This has some wondering if we should add a third wheel to the party and run with a trio of leads in the third season.

In theory, a trio could add depth to the story as there was plenty to chew on from just having Marty, Rust and all their baggage to deal with in season one, so adding more to that could make for a richer story.

But it could also lead us down a path of convolution that muddles the story and bogs things down. It’s unlikely that adding just one more character to the equation would do this, as Nic Pizzolatto knows what he’s doing, but it’s a risk we run.

It’s also a risk worth taking as we need to have this second season be rich with story to make sure that the first season is built upon and not carbon copied and just set in a new location.
