An Examination of True Detective at the SAG Awards

True Detective has been nominated for both SAG’s and Golden Globes coming up to this award season. Now is as good a time as any to collect what information we can to present you with a detailed report of what awards, exactly, True Detective is nominated for and what its chances are. To do that, we’ll split the two award shows and examine them separately.

True Detective is in the unique position of being up for two SAG awards in the same category. Technically this means that True Detective can only walk home with one, but it’s the only drama series to have two actors competing from the same series.

Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey are our two nominees in Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series. With two actors representing True Detective it effectively increases the chances of the show winning.

Full list of nominees:

  • Steve Buscemi, Boardwalk Empire
  • Peter Dinklage, Game of Thrones
  • Woody Harrelson, True Detective
  • Matthew McConaughey, True Detective
  • Kevin Spacey, House of Cards

The chances of True Detective taking of a SAG are fairly high. Boardwalk Empire is currently on its goodbye tour, but True Detective has been on more best-of 2014 lists and was overall better critically received.

That’s not necessarily fair when you consider that it was Boardwalk Empire’s final season and True Detective’s first, but that’s how it is.

Peter Dinklage and Kevin Spacey both have a shot at it, but Game of Thrones doesn’t have the best luck when it comes to awards. High fantasy may have entered mainstream entertainment in a big way, but the various award’s haven’t been quiet as welcoming.

Dinklage is the most recognizable face from Game of Thrones and would stand a good chance if not for True Detective’s double-dose.

Both Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey have leading roles in True Detective and both deliver worthy performances. It only makes sense for the two to be nominated in the same category, but it does create an uneven matchup. Regardless, True Detective is all but guaranteed a SAG award this year.

It would actually be something of an upset if it didn’t win.
