The second season of True Detective is underway with filming, and director Justin Lin is going to be a busy man moving forward with his career — and Star Trek 3.

Justin Lin is a man on the rise in Hollywood, as he has a billion dollar franchise in the Fast and Furious movies, he’s finally getting some major validation as a director with his current choice of work.

Lin was hired to direct the first two episode of True Detective, which was a major shock to those who had written him off as a studio blockbuster director. With that validation under his belt, Lin has added to his body of work by getting offered the job of directing Star Trek 3 for Paramount — which, in case you didn’t know, is a massive franchise.

According to Deadline, who broke the news on Monday night, Justin Lin has been hired to direct Star Trek 3 following his duties on True Detective.

"Paramount Pictures, Skydance Productions and JJ Abrams’ Bad Robot just set Justin Lin to direct Star Trek 3, filling the biggest open directing assignment out there with the filmmaker credited with reviving the Fast & Furiousseries. Lin helmed four of the films that grossed $1.9 billion in worldwide box office."

It’s not just that Lin is taking over Star Trek 3, it’s that he’s filling J.J. Abrams shoes, who left to direct Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens for Disney. Roberto Orci replaced Abrams as director but left the project abruptly for no real reason.

Lin stepping in on Star Trek 3 continues his rise in Hollywood with massively popular projects, and if he can pull it all off he’ll have managed a massive career boost that he clearly deserves a shot at.
