Fargo and True Detective Separated at PGA Awards

It seems the Emmy debate that followed True Detective for some time isn’t quite over. Is the show a mini-series or a regular drama? Apparently nobody can actually agree on that.

The PGA awards will take place on January 24th, shortly after the SAG awards. As we reported earlier, True Detective is nominated at the PGA awards as well as the SAG’s and Golden Globes. The PGA awards can’t figure True Detective out either, and so it’s nominated under Episodic Television.

Fargo, on the other hand, is nominated as Long-Form Television. To give you more insight into this decision (as much as possible, anyway,) we’ll need to look at the other nominees for context.

True Detective is nominated with other similar dramas, such as House of Cards, Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, and Downton Abbey. In other words, series that you would expect True Detective to go up against.

Fargo’s situation is a tad more puzzling. Fargo is going up against The Roosevelts, Sherlock, The Normal Heart, and American Horror Story: Freak Show. So, other mini-series, basically.

The distinction between True Detective and Fargo has proved to be complicated. For some reason. Considering that Fargo’s second season will be a prequel to the first, Fargo is turning out to be less of an anthology series than True Detective.

But the PGA awards have decided to keep the two separated. It’s an odd choice, and it once again ensures that the two won’t be competing head-to-head.
