Rumor: Danish Documentary Filmmaker Janus Metz to Take on True Detective?

Some time ago, HBO announced that True Detective’s second season would feature a rotating roster of detectives. Soon after, Justin Lin was announced as the director of at least the first two episodes of the season. But then things went silent.

Thankfully, that silence has ended. The Danish Film Institute has announced that Danish filmmaker, Janus Metz, will be handling the third episode of True Detective. Metz is known as a documentary director, so that makes him something of an interesting choice to take on True Detective.

But according to The Local, a Danish news outlet, Janus Metz could have been given the gig some time ago:

"“Metz was given the directorial gig by series creator Nic Pizzolatto, who was in Denmark last year for a special screening of True Detective at the home of US Ambassador Rufus Gifford”"

This has not yet been confirmed by True Detective or HBO, so we feel more comfortable giving it rumor status. However, there’s no reason to doubt it.

Something about Janus Metz’s work must have stirred something in Pizzolatto. Hopefully we’ll get a glimpse of that once True Detective’s second season airs, whenever that may be.

It’s been quite a while since we’ve gotten any word about True Detective directors. An original rumor floating around that Exorcist director William Friedkin would be handling at least a single episode have yet to amount to anything solid.
