Golden Globes 2015: True Detective Strikes Out

Well, that was a surprise.

Even though True Detective was nominated in three categories with a double nod in Best Actor — McConaughey and Harrelson — True Detective lost every category it was nominated in last night. It seemed extra cruel, since all of True Detective’s categories were over within forty-five minutes, leaving fans of the show nothing to do but enjoy the rest of the Golden Globes.

The outcome went against not only our own analysis, but also Variety’s. Even though True Detective had two chances at a Best Actor award and still lost was a major surprise, though kudos to Billy Bob Thorton and his funky speech.

It was expected to be True Detective’s night, but Fargo turned out to be a major player. Fargo took home both the Best Actor award and Best Miniseries. It was True Detective’s first shot at facing down Fargo directly, and it lost.

The Golden Globes were True Detective’s first, and, frankly, best shot at an award this season. After losing the Emmy, Matthew McConaughey was thought to be a lock for Best Actor. Perhaps it’s just not meant to be. 2014 was a very competitive year for drama, with many shows turning in fantastic performances — Fargo and True Detective included, of course.

The only un-surprising outcome of the Golden Globes was Michelle Monaghan’s loss. Even though a nomination for her work in True Detective was very much appreciated, it would have been a real shock if she won.

The fact that the Golden Globes turned out nothing like we hoped doesn’t exactly fill us with hope for the rest of the award season. We still have both the SAG and PGA awards to go, but True Detective is only nominated once for each.

But since the Golden Globes were such an upset, it’s possible that anything could happen. It’s possible that True Detective’s luck could turn around, even if it’s not exactly likely. With the ousting of Breaking Bad, True Detective was though to be a real heavy hitter.

But not everything can go according to plan.
