Update on Cary Fukunaga’s Version of Stephen King’s IT

Cary Fukunaga brought exceptional direction to the first season of True Detective. It’s a shame that his role in season two will be reduced to that of an Executive Producer, but it does allow him more time to work on his own projects.

One of those projects is a new adaptation of Stephen King’s IT, which we have previously reported on. Fukunaga’s IT now seems to be moving closer to production, if a recent interview with EW it to believed. EW spoke to the producer, Ghrahame-Smith who gave an update on production status:

"““I think it’s going to be very scary, but I also feel like you’ve got Cary who is going to direct these kids…He’s incredible with tone and atmosphere…As we know, there is an echelon of King adaptations that are classics. There are some that are okay. There are some that we’d rather forget.”"

That’s being somewhat generous. King material has been very hit or miss when it comes to on-screen adaptations, but hopefully the involvement of Cary Fukunaga will bring us something fresh and scary. Fukunaga’s style would lend itself very well to horror — even his version of Jane Eyre had a very eerie bent.

And when it comes to where production on IT is right now:

"“We’re going to get a draft,…any day now from Cary and his writing partner. We’re doing a deal for them to write the second movie. Our hope is to prep sometime in the next few months and shoot in the summer. That one is as much on the runway as we can possibly be. I know New Line is ready to go.”"

It sounds like this one might be headed for the fast-track. Fans of True Detective will miss Cary Fukunaga, but a new version of IT will be served very well by his involvement.
