Would True Detective Benefit from a Theater Viewing?

As many of you may or may not know at this point, Game of Thrones is set to make its IMAX debut. It will be the first time that a series will be shown in theaters and is a great way to celebrate Game of Thrones while ramping up excitement for the upcoming fifth season in April.

True Detective has many qualities of a big budget film, though not the same level of action spectacle that one can find on Game of Thrones. We already think that each season of True Detective should be thought of as a single long film, but is it something that could work in theaters?

From a logistical standpoint, probably not. You’d probably only be able to get two or three episodes, max, for a single speak viewing. And even though IMAX is a great way to showcase all the locales and action of a Game of Thrones episode, that doesn’t mean it would fit True Detective.

Even though True Detective is quite the sight to behold, mostly due to Cary Fukunaga’s superb direction, it would be better suited to a  smaller showing. Your average theater, or maybe even an art house theres is where True Detective belongs.

True Detective would fall flat on at IMAX, but it could bring in dedicated fans of the series and the genre at a smaller showing. HBO goes all out for Game of Thrones because its become a worldwide phenomenon, so it’s unlikely that we’ll see this sort of treatment for True Detective.

But if it ever were to happen, would you be interested in seeing True Detective at a theater?
