What Happened to the True Detective Soundtrack?
The first season of True Detective has been off the air for almost an entire year and the second season is currently in production. So why haven’t we gotten a soundtrack release yet? This has been a long time coming, and at this point it’s impossible to tell just how much longer we’ll have to wait. Has HBO missed the boat entirely on this one?
HBO usually releases their season sets two to three months before the next season of a series is set to premiere. True Detective was an exception to the rule. It can be surmised that they usually do this in order to build hype for an upcoming season.

It’s possible that HBO will be using the strategy for the soundtrack, something from True Detective’s first season that fans have been clamoring for. But there is a definite expiration date on hype, and it’s very possible that the True Detective soundtrack has very much gone bad.
At this point, simply releasing the soundtrack would be a small drop in the bucket. It’s been so long that the haunting tone of True Detective can no longer be easily recalled. It would make more sense for HBO to re-release the first season of True Detective and perhaps bundle it with the soundtrack.
And that’s if they even plan to release it at all. Since it’s been so long it wouldn’t be out of the question to see a digital-only release or even an eventual bundle with season two’s soundtrack. The music of True Detective was one of the definite highlights of the first season. At this point the fact that the soundtrack hasn’t come out just adds to the overall mystery of True Detective, and not in a good way.
There’s no way to know what has been holding up the release for so long or if it’s even still in the cards. But at this point some of the excitement has gone; it feels as if we’re waiting for it to drop just from anticipation that it’s been so long and not from out of a want to actually have it.
