Director Cary Fukunaga’s work on True Detective is all but over; the director is taking backseat Executive Producer role for True Detective’s second season and letting other directors take on his role. Not being intimately involved with True Detective has allowed Cary Fukunaga the time to work on a myriad of other projects, and he’s done just that.

Slate recently caught up with Cary Fukunaga in a two-part interview that touches on his time serving as a judge at the Sundance Film Festival and his upcoming work on a new adaptation of Stephen King’s IT.

When it comes to True Detective Fukunaga makes it quite clear that he’s finished. When probed if he knows who the new directors will be, he had this to say:

"“I don’t know who’s official. I’m really not that associated anymore. I did my first season.”"

That’s a pretty definitive statement. Fukunaga seems to have a “one and done” director-for-hire attitude towards True Detective. Cary Fukunaga was more willing to discuss his upcoming work, especially IT, which he is currently writing the screenplay for.

We’re also excited to see what Fukunaga can do with a new Stephen King adaptation, but it’s a tad disheartening to hear that he’s so disconnected from True Detective at this point even if it’s not surprising.

You can check out the full interview right there. We definitely recommend it, especially if you’re also interested in Fukunaga’s vision for IT. However, don’t go in expecting any True Detective goodies. That shop is closed, at least for now.
