Well, that’s a wrap, folks. The DGA awards took place over the weekend and it turned out to be another shut-out for True Detective. Though it’s difficult to say whether or not True Detective was a favorite to win, it was out-numbered by Homeland’s two nominations while it only had one.

And it was indeed Homeland’s night at the DGA awards, as the Homeland episode “From A to B and Back Again” took home the win. True Detective director Cary Fukunaga has been credited with giving the first season a distinctive look and feel, and that’s praise that has been very well deserved.

Even though Fukunaga was able to take home an Emmy for his direction of True Detective over the summer, the “curse” that’s been following True Detective has struck again. Even though True Detective has done well with the smaller guild awards, that luck couldn’t stretch over to the DGA awards, which is generally a slightly bigger win.

When caught on the red carpet, Fukunaga voiced his surprise at True Detective’s success thus far. It’s a humble moment, even if many believe that True Detective hasn’t exactly been given a fair shake so far this award season.

The DGA awards could signal the last public appearance of Fukunaga in support of his work on True Detective’s first season; he has indicated that he is more than ready to move on. We were hopeful that True Detective could pull in a final win, but sometimes the pieces just don’t fit together.
