Deadline is reporting that Cary Fukunaga’s latest film, Beasts of No Nation, has been exclusively acquired by Netflix. The deal apparently has Netflix distributing the film via its own service and in theaters.
Beasts of No Nation, based on the novel by Uzodinma Iweala, stars Idris Elba as a warlord. So it should be a pretty uplifting affair. This acquisition speaks to the growing power of streaming services, and soon HBO will be pushing their way into the game with their own stand-alone service.
Cary Fukunaga has been distancing himself from True Detective, though he was up for — and lost — a DGA award. Fukunaga is only involved with True Detective’s second season as an executive producer, leaving him time to work on his own projects. He has no day-to-day involvement with the series, which means that he knows just as much, or less, than the rest of us.
A Cary Fukunaga-less second season of True Detective is rumored to premier this summer, but we’re still waiting for the official word on that.
