Only days before the Season 4 premiere of HBO’s popular and critically acclaimed comedy Veep, HBO announced showrunner and creator Armando Iannucci will be leaving Veep after this season, according to Deadline Hollywood.

The report claims Iannucci was having a hard time flying back and forth to London to visit his family, and Iannucci’s tweet on Friday seemed to echo that report (via Deadline):

According to Deadline, HBO has not picked up a fifth season of Veep; however, they have already named David Mandel, an executive producer of Curb Your Enthusiasm, to replace Iannucci.

Veep stars Seinfeld alum Julia Louise-Dreyfus as the Vice President of the United States. Over the course of the first three seasons, Veep has won several huge awards, including several Emmys, and the series is always in the running for Golden Globes.

It’s a bummer Iannucci is leaving the series, as he is the sole driving force behind Veep. It was his series, but he seems comfortable moving on. Typically, HBO would want to wrap the series up with the original creator; however, it makes sense, because the show is so popular, as to why they’d want to give a few more years to a great cast and writing team.

Veep premieres Sunday, April 12, at 10:30 EST on HBO.
