Game of Thrones to go four more years? Not likely

In an interview with Variety, Game of Thrones showrunners and executive producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss played with the idea of the series going on for four more years, but eventually, they backed up away from that proposition.

From the Variety interview:

"“We could go another four years — and we could come up with good stories — but the one thing that really got us excited when we pitched this to HBO was that this isn’t just a regular series. It’s a real story with a beginning, a middle and an end.”"

Benioff even called four more years of the series “a betrayal” to keep the series going for longer because “we’re all having a good time doing it and people are making money off it,” via Variety.

Bravo, Benioff and Weiss!

It’s nice to see two showrunners so passionate about their project that they care more about the product than the dollars. They wouldn’t be the first to let the show fall by the wayside while they kept gettin’ them checks, as Jalen Rose would say.

Obviously, as a fan of the series, I want Game of Thrones to last forever, but realistically, it has to end. I would rather have Game of Thrones end the way it was created to end, the way Benioff and Weiss pitched it to end, rather than drag it on for another five seasons.

I don’t think HBO would “West Wing” Benioff and Weiss and keep Game of Thrones running without them. On the other hand, other networks have been sucked into that money game before.

Currently, Game of Thrones is just beginning the fifth season. Benioff and Weiss’ pitch was for a seven-season series, and it appears they are going to stick with that number.
