True Detective Season Two: Three in a Rut
We’ve talked about the regenerative powers that True Detective can have on a career, specifically Vince Vaughn’s. We saw this with Matthew McConaughey, though it was coupled with a couple of smart moves such as Interstellar and Dallas Buyer’s Club. Everyone’s excited to see the new True Detective leads in action, especially after that first taste.

But three of those four leads have been stuck in an acting rut for some time. Colin Farrell, Vince Vaughn, and Rachel McAdams have all been type-casted trough much of their respective careers.
The most varied of the three has got to be Farrell, who can be seen in Seven Psychopaths, In Bruges, and Fright Night. Though it’s still difficult to shake the idea of Farrell as anything but a leading, affable love interest.
Vince Vaughn and Rachel McAdams are both known for comedies, both romantic and otherwise. True Detective will give each of them a new venue to showcase talents that viewers haven’t seen in a very long time. Hopefully it will lead to different roles, but that’s not a given and may not even be what they’re looking for.
Although Vince Vaughn’s recent comments and change of representation may speak to his own personal desire to take on more dramatic roles, the same can’t really be said for Colin Farrell or Rachel McAdams. True Detective may just be more of an experiment for them and not a path to something new and different.
We’re expecting great things from the second season of True Detective, but all eyes are going to be on these three actors and where their careers take them afterwards. Make no mistake, True Detective’s use of major talent is a tactic, but that doesn’t mean it’s not an interesting or entertaining one. All we can do is wait and see.
Next: True Detective is secretive even to its actors.
