True Detective Season Two: Will it Have More Female Power?

The first season of True Detective was a critical success and quickly became a part of the zeitgeist. As the season went on, however, a common view arose that True Detective didn’t feature enough strong female characters. The female characters that were seen on True Detective often played into common tropes, there’s not really any way around it.

When you love something, you have to be okay with discussing its faults.

Original rumors surrounding the first second season of True Detective involved two female leads. That didn’t come to pass, but we did get a single female lead in Rachel McAdams. McAdams has a lot riding on her shoulders. As the only female lead, she is going to fall under a fair — and unfair — amount of scrutiny.

And we can’t forget about Kelly Reilly, who has a single great shot in the trailer.

The teaser for True Detective‘s second season has gone a long way in not only preparing fans for the second season, but also announcing that it can go on without the ghosts of Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson. It will be a little harder to convince viewers that well-developed female characters have a place in True Detective’s world.

The trailer shows several great shots of Rachel McAdams in various dramatic situations. The pressure will fall on both her and creator Nic Pizzolatto to create a season of compelling television that doesn’t rely on tired clichés and tropes.

The second season doesn’t have to be better than the first in every way imaginable, but it does in this specific instance.
