Matthew McConaughey’s Sea of Trees Picked Up by Roadshow Attractions

Matthew McConaughey’s career can almost be thought of as pre/post True Detective. That may not be entirely fair since McConaughey actually started his upward descent with The Lincoln Lawyer and Dallas Buyer’s Club. It is what it is.

And Matthew McConaughey is currently showing no signs of slowing down. The days of the rom-com McConaughey are over. Variety is reporting that an upcoming drama, The Sea of Trees, has been picked up for distribution by Roadshow Attractions.

The Sea of Trees is directly by Gus Van Sant, a director most famous for art-house films. The film is about a man who travels to Japan’s famous Suicide Forest to, well, commit suicide, and meets a Japanese man there for the same purpose. Sounds like a real fun time.

Matthew McConaughey has successfully proven that he has what it takes to take on heady drama, and the direction of Gus Van Sant may be able to bring out even more of that McConaughey charm. In a seriously depressing way, that is.

Matthew McConaughey helped put True Detective on the map, even though it was ignored at award ceremonies until recently. His success now has all eyes on Vince Vaughn, one of the four stars in True Detective’s second season.

Thanks to Roadshow Attractions, hopefully we’ll be able to check out more of Matthew McConaughey’s dramatic work sooner rather than later. If you happen to be at the Cannes Film Festival you’ll be able to catch Sea of Trees on May 16th.

More of that is always a good thing. You know, until fame goes full circle and people start wondering when he’ll return to romantic comedies.
