The Definitive Version of the True Detective Big Hug Mug is Fan-Made (Photo)
As recently confirmed by True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto, the second season will be making a clean break from the rest. This is something that we support, but just like all the other fans out there, the first season of True Detective will always have a place in our hearts. That can make letting go a little difficult.

But if holding onto the past is going to create great fan-art like this, we’re all for it. A True Detective fan on Reddit took it upon himself to re-crate Rust Cohle’s classic Big Hug Mug in a way that pays perfect tribute to the character. It’s so good, in fact, that HBO should sell it as merchandise.
You can check it out below. It combines the duality of something as happy as a mug offering, say, big hugs, and a man as dark as True Detective’s Rust Cohle. Although Rust is currently the most associated with the mug, it’s not actually the first time we’ve seen it in popular culture.
The famous big hug mug can also be seen in Arrested Development, but it failed to make much of a splash there. There’s something that is so perfect about Rust Cohle, looking like a truck hit him, with this mug. We’re calling it now: this is the best version of the Big Hug Mug. All other True Detective Big Hug Mug re-creation enthusiasts can pack it in. It’s over.
