Jude Law has just been confirmed to star in The Young Pope created by Paolo Sorrentino, according to a report from Deadline Hollywood. Earlier this month, Deadline reported Law was going to star in the series, but now it is official.

The Young Pope is an eight-part miniseries heading straight to HBO.

In Young Pope, Law will play the “complex and conflicted character” Lenny Belardo, who becomes Pius XIII, according to the report.

Here’s what Sorrentino says the series is about, according to the report:

"”The clear signs of God’s existence. The clear signs of God’s absence. How faith can be searched for and lost. The greatness of holiness, so great as to be unbearable when you are fighting temptations and when all you can do is to yield to them. The inner struggle between the huge responsibility of the Head of the Catholic Church and the miseries of the simple man that fate (or the Holy Spirit) chose as Pontiff. Finally, how to handle and manipulate power in a state whose dogma and moral imperative is the renunciation of power and selfless love towards one’s neighbor."

Sound interesting?

The series is co-produced by HBO, Sky, and Canal+, according to the report, and will begin production soon in Italy, the U.S., Africa, and Puerto Rico. There has been no announcement of a release date yet.

Per usual with HBO, you know they’re going to go all out with this series. The religious premise of the series isn’t exactly all that interesting to me; however, the combination of star power, HBO, Law, and Sorrentino, I feel like The Young Pope is a can’t-miss hit.

Hopefully, I’m right in thinking that, but we never know. I could see the series going two ways. Either, it’s going to embrace the historical and try to make not-so-high stakes story. Or, they can embrace the drama and thrill of power and go all Game of Thrones with it. We’ll see what happens.
