Colin Farrell took a trip to Hawaii for the Maui Film Festival. We reported a while back that Farrell would be receiving the Navigator Award. It also turns out that having Colin Farrell on hand could lead to some interesting True Detective info.

Variety was able to sit down with Colin Farrell for a long interview while at the fest. The interview is not focused on True Detective, but it would have been a huge surprise if it didn’t come up.

Right of the bat Farrell apparently said that he “couldn’t reveal much,” but then he went on to give a a small taste of his character, Ray Velcoro.

He described Velcoro as a “burnout,” and likened him to his own past substance abuse. This gives a little more credence to the recent leaked plot details. He then went on to describe Velcoro a little more:

"“He’s somebody who like many of us in life is wrestling with events that took place in his past, and is trying to move forward from them, but trapped in this continual cycle of behavior he can’t get out of. I think fundamentally he’s a good man that made some very bad choices.”"

Like all of the main characters on True Detective, Colin Farrell’s has a troubled past. Farrell also described himself as a fan of the first season and thought the new scripts were “extraordinary stuff.” He also went into season two’s differences from the first:

"“There are four main characters, as opposed to the two-character structure that’s in the first piece. But it’s a lot of the same sensibilities, and a lot of the characters are struggling with the same kind of existential quandaries and questions that are related to meaning and purpose and the burying of the darkness that may be in your past.”"

That sounds about right for True Detective. Nic Pizzolatto’s worlds are not black and white, and the characters reflect that. Lastly, he took that thought a step further:

"“…I think it’s more to do with what’s happening with the characters than the solving of a murder, which is what I kind of felt about the first year anyway. So hopefully people respond to it. You never know. But it was a blast to work on.”"

That’s the feeling that we were getting from the season two trailers we’ve seen so far. True Detective season two will focus more on the characters than ever before, which will hopefully allow the season to wrap up a little cleaner than the first.

Colin Farrell may be under the same gag order as everyone else, but this interview was the most interesting one he’s given on True Detective so far.
