Rust Smokes a lot on True Detective (Video)
The second season of True Detective will premiere later this month. It’s a very exciting time to be a fan of True Detective, but that doesn’t mean we have to turn away from the past altogether. Rust Cohle may be one of the most interesting television characters of all time, and fans continue to be fascinated by him.

Take Gabriele Scarcelli, for instance. He submitted to us this clip of Rust Cohle smoking that you can see below. That may not sound too interesting, but it’s by no means that simple. It’s an artistic attempt to pay tribute to True Detective and Rust’s bad habit.
And it’s damn fine work.
Titled “Matthew the Smoker,” Scarcelli took notice of how many times Rust picks up a cigarette throughout the first season of True Detective and mashed them together in a creative supercut. There’s almost something calming about it, actually. The episode number is tastefully placed in the background of each instance, and the cuts are super smooth.
In a talk at the Tribeca Film Festival, True Detective director Cary Fukunaga went into Matthew McConaughey’s smoking on the show. McConaughey was not a smoker previously, but went wild with it to further get into the mind of Rust. In other words, McConaughey smokes a lot during the first season of True Detective.

Thanks to Gabriele Scarcelli for the submission.
