HBO’s Game of Thrones Wraps Up Season 5 Tonight

For Game of Thrones fans, today marks one of the worst days of the year. Season 5 of Game of Thrones officially ends tonight with the season finale that’s sure to be one of the most exciting episodes of the season.

No spoilers here! We’ve all heard the rumors about what’s going to happen, so let’s just leave it at that.

If anything, Season 5 can be described as interesting. It’s the first season where showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff have been forced to make a lot of tough decisions about what to include and what not to include from the books. Because the sixth and seventh books of George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire have not been completed, Benioff and Weiss have also been forced to got “off-book” for a lot of this series and begin connecting the dots for viewers as the end draws near.

When they pitched Game of Thrones to HBO, they only planned for seven seasons, and both, Weiss and Benioff have said they’d like to stick to that plan. HBO has hinted they’d like to keep the series running for an extra two or three seasons.

As of right now, it seems like seven is the magic number for Weiss and Benioff, and everything that has happened in Season 5 is looking like that, too, as all of the storylines are starting to come together.

While the first four seasons have generated a lot of positive reviews and acclaim from critics and fans, the fifth season has been slightly less consistent. Game of Thrones has also come under fire for their treatment of women and using sexual assault as a plot point.

Despite the backlash from some fans and critics, Season 5 has had its moments, like the epic battle at Hardhome, Daenerys first real flying lesson on the back of Drogon, Valyria, and plenty of others.

Obviously, we’ll wait until we see the season finale to judge the full season, but if the showrunners are going where I think they are going, the next two seasons of Game of Thrones might be their best yet.

The Season 5 Finale premieres on HBO, HBO Now, and HBO Go at 9 p.m. EST.
