The first season of True Detective has come and gone and the second is almost upon us. But fans are still discovering secrets hidden away in True Detective’s beautifully shot scenes. The first season of True Detective also hides a few treats for studied cinephiles. It’s likely that many of these references were instructed by Nic Pizzolatto, but it’s also possible that Cary Fukunaga had a hand in it as well. Tea and a Movie has put together a great clip of the references that can be found in True Detective season one.

If you consider yourself a fan of film, you owe it to yourself to check this out. Apparently there are a mountain of references to David Fincher’s Se7en, many of which can be easily missed. But there are also shots reminiscent of the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre and a stunning reworking of a shot from Andrei Tarkovsky’s Ivan’s Childhood

With the loss of Cary Fukunaga and a move to the more traditional route of having multiple directors per season, True Detective season two may have lost this cinematic charm. In case you need  a refresher, we are still only aware of a single director: Justin Lin.

You can check out the video below, which may just promote yet another re-watch of True Detective’s first season. Don’t blame us if that happens.
